One of our users just posted a nice review on eHam, the team thank him and the other users for their kind comments :D

A very important point was raised in his review which I would like to address here! He said he hoped that Log4OM would not grow too large as has some other software?

The team and I feel that it is important that we only grow in the correct way and keep the program uncomplicated and streamlined making it easy to set up and use for everyone.

Very early in the development the team had a discussion and we all agreed that it was not a good idea to make a "Swiss Army Knife" type of program as some others have tried to do!

This is why we integrate with external specialist program's for the other features like Data communications, Rotator control etc. the software programmers of those program's have many years of experience in those aspects of ham radio software which we would not expect to compete with, we will add more external software integration as time passes.

We do what we are good at and that is data management which if you think about it covers almost everything we have done so far, the database, cluster, statistics, QSL management is all 'Data management'.

We will introduce Winkeyer support very soon but even this is a form of data management - We send data to the keyer chip which in turn translates our code into transmitter keying.

Our short term roadmap is to add some more of the most important awards and tidy the statistics in general while we wait for the final version of the new ADIF to be released. Once the new ADIF is agreed Daniele will concentrate on ensuring compliance to the new format and then we will move onto another new feature that will be announced soon ;)

I like what you have to say about the plan to avoid program bloat. Log4OM is a great logbook program. It doesn't try to be everything, so it can focus on doing what it does better than everyone else.

Keep up the good work!

In my "real life" before I retired I was a Product Development Manager for a large telecommunications equipment company. One of the watchwords (watchphrase?) of all our design and development teams was "Resist Creeping Elegance" --- I consider that good business, even if you're not "in business".

Having said that, WinKey support would be nice.

We just had our first adverse review on eHam from K8SI

He says he could not get his TS480 to connect and therefore the software is useless, strange because both of my TS480's connect fine.

I notice however that he has never asked for help either here, on the old Yahoo Group or directly to me - Strange!

Never the less I have emailed the guy and offered assistance so lets se if he responds

Pity though it dropped our unblemished record to a 4.8 :(

Terry:

Something is not right, my TS-480SAT connects every time flawlessly.

I answered his review on eham. I think we should all go back to eham and make our views known without attacking the guy. I don't think he even tried to get the rig to connect.

As a result of two emails that I sent to Jim K8SI I last evening received his response.

He said his issue was that the specific baud rate he was using, 57.6 k, was not available in Log4OM and in Hamlib it is not! Lele has now added this. He did not want to use another Baud rate because his other software packages were already set up to 57.6 k.

He did agree to ask eHam to remove his reveiw and this apparently was his message to eHam.

"I am writing to request that you please remove my poor review of LOG4OM
software. I admit that I was probably hasty in my commentary, and probably
didn't give it a fair shake.
73,
Jim K8SI"

He also apologised to Log4OM as follows:

"I do see that plenty of other hams have had good luck using it, so
it can't be all bad. Just doesn't work for me. I humbly apologize for my
haste in passing judgment, especially so publicly.

73,
Jim K8SI"

Now we wait to see if eHam remove his reveiw in a timely manner!

I replied to Jim and pointed out that he could have used Omnirig for 57.6 k and said..

"Thank you for retracting your review and rest assured that if you
decide to use Log4OM at sometime in the future you will be given every
encouragement to do so and help with setting up."
