David,
When downloading, try to re-type your password (make sure it's correct). I somehow vaguely remember, when trying to help a friend a while back, he was unable to use LOG4OM/LOTW because he entered his password incorrectly. If I recall correctly, LOG4OM/LOTW gave no indication of the problem being incorrect name/password.
Try it. It may just work.

Re: LOTW Download
Thanks Marvin - great suggestion - we have download success.
After sending the zip file to Terry, I followed up on your suggestion. First, I searched the log in the zip file and found junk in where the LOTW password should have been. I went back to options and re-entered my password and....

100% pilot error. I switch between the Windows universe and the OSX universe way too often and have picked up this habit of cut and pasting passwords from my password manager instead of retyping. Simply an errant cut and paste. Strangely, it seems to work fine on the upload and it shouldn't have. But thats a problem for another day.
The great support here is why I'm switching over to Log4OM - Terry's patience help and Martin and Marvin's great suggestions - well done everyone - thanks! Terry, please close this issue and disregard the email.

Re: LOTW Download
David,
I'm glad it worked!
I wish LOG4OM / LOTW would let users know when there is a name / password issue. I'm sure my friend wasn't the first one nor you the last one spending unnecessarily long time troubleshooting a problem that was a simple wrong name / password issue.

Re: LOTW Download
Marvin,
As far as I remember there is no error response from LOTW that warns of an incorrect password so we don't know if the zero download is due to wrong LOTW user name, Password, location or just a crap connection.
Therefore it is impossible for us to provide a meaningful message for the user other than displaying the download messages in the download window so at least the user is warned of a 'Zero' file.
Download just uses a LOTW API which requires the user call and password which is provided by user input, whereas upload is done by Log4om using the TQSL program and the relevant 'Cert'!
So it does not follow that just because the upload works that the download will, because the user can enter incorrect information for the download whereas TQSL is configured correctly by the cert for the upload.
Unlike other programs we do not assume that a 'Zero' return indicates a name or password error because that is just guesswork

Re: LOTW Download
Terry,
Thanks for the explanation. It confirms what I suspected. I wonder if a feedback to ARRL could result in them improving it.

Re: LOTW Download
Sorry to bring back an old thread. I just had a very similar problem. Everything was working fine with LOTW. Then uploads to LOTW worked fine, but no downloads. At first I though there was just some issue with the ARRL or people not uploading. But when things didn't get better after a week, I suspected there was something on my end. I guess somehow the password was accidentally changed. It would be nice when there are no QSOs to pull down to double check the password. Just something along the lines of ("If your password is incorrect, the LOTW will return no QSOs. Because of the ARRL interface there is no way to determine if you have the right password.")
Glad I found this in the forums. But it did take quite a few searchs before I did. Would be nice to have a LOTW Troubleshooting section someplace in the manual or the forums.
Thanks,
K7APS

Re: LOTW Download
I suppose that you are aware that the ARRL recently changed the format and filtering of user passwords and as a result many LOTW users could not log in because LOTW no longer accepted passwords in upper case etc.?
