By convention all digital modes like PSK, JT65, FT8, Hellschriber, Olyvia and all of the hundreds of other digital modes use USB - You set your radio to USB - D or similar for data transmission dont you?
When you double click on a cluster spot the mode changes on your radio to USB if its a spot in a digital/data part of the spectrum.
Incidentally you made an error in the bandplan that you edited it should be DIGITAL not FT8, see other bandplan entries for examples like
<BandPlanRange>
<Band>40m</Band>
<Start>7035</Start>
<End>7046</End>
<BandUpperLimit>false</BandUpperLimit>
<EmissionType>DIGITAL</EmissionType>
<ModulationType>USB</ModulationType>
</BandPlanRange>
the question becomes: what is the point of creating a user file?
1. Because without defining what parts of the band are to be used you could be operating outside of your countries band allocation and will be notified of being OUT OF BAND in Log4OM
2. So that log4OM can determine if the transmission type is Phone, CW or Digital/Data for the cluster identification.
3. So that CAT control can follow the settings you choose in the Options/Cat & Cluster tab regarding setting your radio to a digital mode like USB-D or RTTY for an Icom radio or inverting the sideband for some other radio types.
4. There are many countries within an IARU region and they do not all have the same frequency allocations e.g. In the UK we have several spot frequencies in the 60M band whereas Denmark can use the whole band and other areas have just one small section of 60M. So you can tailor a bandplan to be a 'USER' bandplan applicable to your specific country.
And if you are supremely helpfull you can make a special bandplan for your DXCC number and pass it to the Log4OM team for inclusion in later releases.
Bandplan selection priority order on starting Log4oM is as follows User bandpan - If not found then DXCC bandplan - If no DXCC bandplan - Generic IARU regional bandplan
The Bandplan does not enable any of the hundreds of digital modes to be selected in the mode field, this does require user intervention.
