In need of an RS-232 solution for FTdX5000 plus OM2500A plus Log4OM control

Post by KW4CQ »

I have the OM Power OM2500A amp and FTDX-5000 transceiver. I need to connect Log4OM on my PC with my Yaesu FTDX-5000 transceiver and the OM2500A. My transceiver has just one RS232 port on the back and no USB port. Using the FTDX-5000 with the OM2500A CAT connection works just fine for band switching, etc. but I was hoping to find a way to get everything working with Log4OM by using a simple RS-232 cable splitter for all three connections. Is this, along with HamLib or OmniRig software going to work in order to get all three talking to each other or is some other type of device appropriate? I am in bit of a quandary over all this and sure could use some suggestions from anyone.

Thank all and 73, Bob KW4CQ

I think your best thing would be to fit an extra PCI card with a couple more rs232 serial sockets on

Then use a virtual serial port manager to combine the ports while providing a virtual port for software to use

I do have the additional serial com ports available on my PC but I am not familiar with a virtual com port manager software as such. Could you give me an example and I will do a Google search for the same on the web and educate myself.

Thank you Terry,

Problem solved. Log4OM now has complete CAT control with the FTDX-5000 and OM2500A. The solution was shown in the amplifier's user manual all along. I just had to connect a serial cable between the OM2500A and my PC and a serial cable between my FTDX-5000 and the amplifier. Once the settings in OmniRig, Windows Device Manager, and Log4OM were set to the correct settings and saved everything worked perfectly. I can now click on a DX spot on Log4OM's cluster panel and the radio and amp jumps to the frequency and mode. One minor bug I have yet to figure out though is if I power off the amplifier I loose CAT control over the radio.

Love that Log4OM,

I don't think you will stop that and it's not a bug in Log4om or Omnirig

I think the CAT through facility in the amplifier closes when you turn the amp off thereby blocking the CAT path

Yes, Terry. I can see that happening in the amp's schematics.
Sometimes you can't have it all. hi hi.
