Hamlib timeout

What exactly does the "Polling delay (ms)" in the Hamlib Parameters do?
It doesn't seem to change the polling interval.
I'm trying to track down a problem with rigctld where it appears Log4OM is timing out waiting for an answer when the answer takes more than a second or two (which can happen sometimes during band changes and such).
