US Counties missing from US-CA award

Post by vk1di »

Just started chasing US Counties and using the Log4OM US-CA Award. There seem to be several island counties not listed, for example PR (Puerto Rico) and VI (US Virgin Islands). It appears only US States and Hawaii appear listed, no US islands. Also Alaska seems to only have 4 general counties (Central, Northwestern, Southcentral, SouthEastern) when the list in QRZ.com Logbook shows 27 AK counties. Sorry as a non US resident am not familiar with US Counties.

Ian,

USA-CA award covers the 'states' only for USA. The lower 48 contiguous states as well as Alaska and Hawaii. Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands are not 'states' in the USA. Close, but not yet approved by congress for such status and I'm not going to even guess on that possibility or not.

As for Alaska what you see on QRZ can add frustration as there are all sorts of local government/municipality issues involved.

The general regions you have noted are what is used for the USA-CA award.

Hi Nolan,

Thanks for the information. Yes sounds like QRZ have their own unofficial list. I was going by the QRZ logbook list of Counties, which includes the US Islands as well. If the actual US-CA award does not then I won't worry about their counts. I've only got around 400 counties confirmed so far so will keep at it, just looking for proper US states.

Ian,

CQ Magazine is the official controller/operator of the USA-CA Awards. Their URL is below:

https://cq-amateur-radio.com/cq_awards/ ... wards.html

Here is a site that OMs use to help in County Hunting: https://www.countyhunter.com/

Here is K3WWP's county hunting history: http://www.k3wwp.com/awards_ss_usaca.html

The MARAC is a more current version for County Hunting as so many OMs are "mobile" these days. They incorporated the changes to the USA-CA rules at CQ Magazine. http://marac.org/

A lot of information at the MARAC site to digest.

Alaska and its history of counties, regions, boroughs is a whole different can of beans to dig into. Here is a link to some data about Alaska and their Judicial Districts: https://www.qsl.net/kl7j/county.html

Hi Nolan,

Thanks for the references. The history of Alaska Çounties is quite interesting to read, it actually does not have Counties but Boroughs, and how and where these are defined is quite political. Anyway have only worked a handful of Alaskan stations so not too worried about it. There are many other US state counties to keep me busy.
