Unable to close down Log4OM

Post by VK7XX »

I have version 1.17.0.0 installed, and it is running well except that I am unable to close it down. It does not make any difference whether I choose File/Exit, or the red X at the top right of the window. Clicking either produces the "Confirm form closing" box, and clicking OK then displays red writing on screen saying "Backup In Progress" but the program never closes. On two occasions I left it for 15 minutes and then 35 minutes just to see, and still no shut down.

I have it installed in a Windows XP Pro SP3 machine with all latest updates installed. I have the program set to make two 'on shut down backups', one to a second HDD and one to a USB dongle. The first backup, to the HDD gets 2 files saved, an .xml and an .adi while the second loction has just an .adi file which is actually much much smaller that the .adi on the hdd. (is this size difference normal ??? maybe this is causing the shutdown problem???? )

The only way I am able to close Log4OM is to wait an appropriate time for the backups to be written and then use Ctrl/Alt/Del to open Task Manager and then choose the Log4OM application and "End Task" and of course, doing it this way any changes I have made to screen positions / size / grid detachments etc do not get saved :-(

Anyone any ideas on this ???

John

PS.... clearing the checkbox "Autobackup on closing" does allow the program to close correctly.

Added by way of edit......... I wanted to check whether my shut down problem was somehow tied in with the secondary backup going to a USB dongle however, I find I am unable to clear the field, so, once a backup location is entered, one must always exist.. How do I clear this field so as to disable the secondary backup ???

Did you uninstall the old version before installing the new one?

Terry, I never had an old version installed. For reasons of my own I have been waiting for a version that has the editable column headers. I didn't realise it was in the version previous to 1.17.0.0 And now I see that 1.17.1.0 is already out so I will do a complete uninstall / reinstall and get back here with a further report.

Daniele, when I imported my HRD log ADI file, no errors were reported.

Hopefully 1.17.1.0 will also allow me to clear the secondary backup location box.

I am back and here is my report, as promised.

I did a total uninstall of version 1.17.0.0 including manual removal of the folders left behind in application data....... I installed 1.17.1.0, made no changes to setup other than adding in the required info to make it work. All went OK and the program closed OK.

I opened the program again, imported my log and the closed again.. All OK.

Opened program again, changed setup by adding in a backup folder in settings1 and enabling auto backup on closing. I then closed the program and all was OK.

I opened the program again, went back to the Settings 1 page and added in an Optional secondary backup folder, pointing this to my USB stick/dongle, saved settings and closed the program... This time the program did not close, and, after 10 minutes of waiting, I had togo to the ctrl/alt/delete task magager and kill Log4om. I know that there is nothing wrong with this stick/dongle because HRD backs up to it daily.

I opened the program again and find that there is no way to remove (make blank again) the info in that Optional secondary backup box......

Being unable to completely remove the info in this box, I changed it to point to a different filder on a different hard drive than that in the main Backup folder. Now the program closes again so, my conclusion is, there is a problem with Log4OM writing a backup to the USB stick/dongle.

Lastly, a request. Please make some way to erase the information entered in to the Optional (and main too) Backup folders.

This is a puzzle! I have just tried 3 different USB sticks of different manufacturers and sizes in different ports and although, on my stop watch, the program took on average 3 seconds longer to close using the dongles than saving the backup to a hard drive location it all worked fine.

Have you tried different dongles in different ports?

The field will clear/empty if you click the "cancel" button on the 'Browse for folder' window

BTW I also tested on my Pentium 4 laptop running XP with SP3

To delete path in 1.17.1 simply press the folder selection button near the path, and click CANCEL instead of OK.
This should work :)

Terry, regarding the USB sticks. I only have the one. It is a fairly old 2 gig thing. I have changed the port and result is the same.. (program does not close or if the red cross icon is clicked, 'Backup in progress' never gos away.)

As you have tested this on your machine, It has to be my stick... tho, as stated before, it works perfectly well with Ham Radio Deluxe Log backups.

Next time I am in town I will but another stick and see how it gos.

OK Also on clearing the fields for the backup locations... 'cancel' worked fine. Maybe a short note in the manual re this :-) b.t.w., the manual is superb.... and the program has come a loooooooong way since the time I tried it a couple of years ago. It is so good now that I used it all day yesterday and have abandoned HRD. A great job to all concerned.

UPDATE... I have purchased a new stick. Sadly, I still have the same problem. I tried with the new stick in several ports of the USB hub I have and I also tried with it plugged directly in to ports on the back of the tower (stright in to the puta's main board) Always the same. As soon as I choose to use a USB stick as a backup location Log4OM will not shut down.

I know that others (Terry) are not having this issue and am just my post to let you know I have tried different things. If anyone else has this issue, please let me know... I hate being alone.

John,

This is annoying!

Please set your USB stck backup path and plug the stick into the computer

In the options settings menu check the box labeled 'Debug' and save the config

Then click the backup button on the toolbar

In help go to show log and send me the text file by email please.
