Config.xml not saved, reset needs warning.

Post by NN7D »

Hi guys,

I have been helping another friend (W6MWY) with his Log4OM installation. He went in to Settings to modify which bands show up on the cluster and through unfamiliarity, he clicked on the Reset Config button instead of the Floppy Disk icon to save the Setting changes! :o Of course, this wiped out his current configuration. Gone. So he called me. I went in to help restore his configuration and found that the config.xml file had not been backed up since March of 2015 when we first installed his software! And this Config.xml file was bare, before we entered all his settings. All his backup setting on the Settings 1 tab were set to default. He was on V 1.21.

Checking my computer and its Log4OM installation and my config.xml backups, I only see backups when I made changes to my settings. So, what I think we have is a case where we set up his Log4OM configuration, and no changes were made and thus no backups until he Reset the configuration, and still no backup, which left him without any meaningful backups. This required about an hour of work re-entering everything in his Settings to return to normal, including all his external log links and logins.

I would suggest 2 things:
1. That the config.xml file be backed up every time the program is exited, like the log file. Or at least BEFORE a Reset of the config file.
2. Add a warning to the Reset Config button action to warn that their current configuration is going to be reset back to default values!

The above would help to insure others don't make this mistake.

Thanks,

Doug, you should have a backup in the same folder of your ADIF backups. did you confirm you have ADIF but no config? At this point can you confirm that ADIF backups are regularly in place?

Hi Lele! There were several backups of the config.xml file in the backup folder (which contains the ADIF backups), but the latest xml backup was after the "reset" and thus of no value, and the next older xml backup was when he first setup his Log4OM and did not contain anything useful of his current setup. That was what I was trying to explain above - it seems no backup of the config was made unless some change was made to his setup, and none had been made. Or something else prevented routine backups.
