Many hams do not have the correct locator square on QRZ.com... even when they have entered details in their biography

In the case of stations in England the default square is IO91vl which puts them in London. A lot of English hams have this square on QRZ.com, which is frustrating when working them on VHF/UHF as the beam heading is then usually wrong.

I suspect the default locator square for many stations is also the centre of their capital.

A facility to “blank”, or ignore, a particular square is probably easy to add to the settings menu in Log4OM and could then avoid spurious beam headings and distances.

Consider an amateur in Australia, USA, South Africa or even Israel, having an approximate square to beam onto at least gets them in the ball park.

If implemented it would have to be a user selection and how many central grid squares would we need to cover, London, Paris, Berlin, Brussels Oslo, Stockholm etc etc etc

Terry, it’s an “own country” VHF/UHF issue, HF and other countries aren’t usually a problem. So mostly just one square is involved. In the case of England the square in question is IO91vl. “ignore” or “display in red” based on a user entry of a rogue square is perhaps not hard to code.

FWIW, 550 hams are listed on QRZ as being in IO91vl... another spurious locator is JJ00aa (zero deg lat/long) with 1443 hams listed, including several with English callsigns.

I appreciate it’s not peculiar to Log4OM and is really a QRZ.com issue, and that active hams should pay attention to their details on QRZ, but unfortunately many do not... even when they have written a long biography.
