Problems with the chat

I do not know if the issue has been discussed in the past. I made a search but found none.
Sometimes I get a message in the chat but I have no time to check it, especially in huge pileups.
If I get to the chat after some time I find no messages nor the sender.
The red icon keeps on blinking and no way to switch it off.
What am I doing wrong?
