additional backups do not rotate

I am on Windows 10 Pro and LOG4OM 2.18. This problem predates 2.18.

I am aware from searching the forum that Terry recommends that one should leave the default set and not check setting rotation which I interpret to mean backups will exist until you go in and manually remove additional backups.

In my case, I have enabled start rotation, entered 15 days, but the backups are never removed. They continue on.

The primary backup seems to work okay.

Charlie,

The 'historical' folder backups are what recycle/rotate. I happen to use "5", but that is just my choice.

The accumulation of backups do not drop off/disappear on any cycle. I've taken to just deleting them now and again. Or I simply create a new / dated folder for my backups and let them stack up again. The 'historical' folder will be automatically created in those new/dated folders as well.

I can't give/provide a "clear" definition of why Daniele has the backups working that way. I can assure you we've had discussions about it over the past year as well. ;)

For me the backup rotation of 5 days works exactly as expected. Here is the snapshot of the backup directory.

Larry,

Certainly scratching my head now. Where are your json files that are saved with the backup adi files?

Below is a screen clip of a new backup folder I created on 11/15/21.

Hi Nolan -

This is the "Historic" subfolder under my "Log4OM Backup" directory - which looks like a monthly snapshot. (Note here that I am a new Log4OM2 user and don't recall when I switched to it, so although there are 5 "sets" of entries here, I'm not sure whether there will be more or if they are rotating."

Nolan just a bit more info - I didn't start using Log4OM2 until July, so these entries in the Historic folder may accumulate, won't know until December I think.

Also, I am using 2.18.00 currently.

I use a MySQL database (Maria 10.6) and it is backed up with other processes.

Larry,

Tnx for input / update. I don't think using a MySQL d/b makes any difference, but good to know that ... "just in case".

My files in the Historic folder do rotate at the value I choose.

The multiple backups happen (for example) when one might open/close Log4OM2 multiple times each day. That way any changes are freshly saved.

What I've (and others on the Alpha/Beta teams) noted is that the multiple backups just keep stacking up.

Not really a huge issue save for if one has that backup going to a Dropbox (or similar) that has a capacity limit. Eventually one will get a warning that space it about to cap out. This is what happened to me recently and got my attention to start asking about 'why' ??

Larry,

BTW - welcome and thanks for using Log4OM2.
