1. Click either on the crown icon or the Contest/contest menu
This will open the contest window
2. Click on the small page icon at the extreme right of the top tool bar of the contest window
Set the contest name, date/time and other parameters like strings/prefix/suffix etc - Click the save (Floppy disk) icon and close the settings window
3. Click the crown icon on the top tool bar of the contest window (Second one from the right next to the page icon in 2 above)
The contest window will change from Red Grid/contest disabled to Green 'Contest mode enabled'

Terry,
I do not think we are talking about the same thing.
So first of all are you referring to this?

That will disappear when you click on the small crown at the top to enable contest mode

Re: Contest mode
Not sure what step your missing but it works exactly as I described in my step by step explanation above!
What version of Log4om are you using?

Re: Contest mode
I just got it to work while I was making a video to show you.
Something is flaky though. I just noticed the contest mode disabled does not come back after you stop the contest mode so this adds to the confusion as you do not realize its disabled.
I switched from a CW contest to SSB contest which should not require a fixed string. But it does or it wont work.
Just a couple little quirks
PS: All my version info and setup is in my signature.

Re: Contest mode
Also Terry I do not know if you have noticed this or not, but you have to click a lot of things in Version 2 twice.
If you are running apps on other monitors and you come back to Log4OM you go to click a button and it wont work until the second click. I assume the first click is to get focus to the app and the second is to make the button click.

Re: Contest mode
Rich,
On the Contest interface/Contest log, to the right of Grid Textbox (right of operator name), if mine does not say CONTEST MODE ENABLED then the grid is marked GRID DISABLED.
So if I pick a contest that has ended, there is a brief message under CALLSIGN that says the contest has ended and CONTEST MODE ENABLED is not display, hence GRID DISABLED is shown on the grid.
Suggestions (minor) for development team;
1) The name on the contest dialog should be consistent. To get to the window you click on the main screen Crown which is call "Contest interface". Or you click on the menu Contest->Contest. The window displays "Contest log" on the title bar. I think it should be "Contest Interface" for all three.
2) The Crown button on the main screen could turn Green when Contest is active (Like the Cluster and SuperCluster buttons). I do see between the Alert and the End controls, it says CONTEST in green.

Re: Contest mode
It appears that contest mode might stay running after you close it as well. Because I just fired it up and was presented with this without clicking the crown the second time.
I had to disconnect and reconnect to clear the contacts.
Its not a big deal to me as I use N1MM. I am trying to help some local hams use it instead of them entering contacts into QRZ. These are guys that work 50 contacts at most.
