Changing User Profiles

Post by kn4zo »

Is there a quicker way to change user profiles than choosing them from settings and restarting the program? My XYL and myself are both hams and I've set up separate profiles and databases/logs for us, but we sometimes work together and it's not very convenient to restart the program all the time.

The only solution I see is to use one merged log when we work together and change the operator call between QSOs, then export each operator's QSO into an ADIF, then import into each operator's log after we're done. Isn't there an easier way?

Also, is there a way to see what database is actually in use at any given time?

Thanks in advance,

Hi Dave,
No there is no quick way, however why don't you use the portable version for your wife, it will run standalone from a folder on your desktop or from a memory stick.

The current log is shown at the bottom right of the Log4om window like c:\..............\location\g4pop.sqlite

Thanks Terry.

I didn't think of running two instances at the same time. I may have to try that, but not sure how it would work with rig control, clusters, etc. I'll look into it, though. We have both been inactive for several years, and I'm not sure if she has much interest in getting back into it or not. I suspect that she will, though after I get things set up again, so I want to be ready for her.

I don't know how I missed the log shown at the bottom! I looked all over in the menus and settings for it, but didn't see it right in front of me.

Rig control will be OK if you have separate rigs but if you only have one rig to share then although both instances will connect OK via Omnirig because Omnirig multi threads there could be conflicts if you both operate simultaneously!

Fo clusters just log your wife into the cluster either with her own call or your call plus -1, like G4POP-1

Log4OM on start will check for existing instances of the application, so will not run.
You can try changing the name of the executable in PORTABLE version from Logomui.exe to something else (remember to rename the logomui.exe.config accordingly.
Same must be done for communicator, and DIFFERENT TCP PORTS should be choosen for them.
A little bit complicated but possible.

Small note:
Log4Om ask you to restart the software after a configuration change because there are a lot of things that should be "recycled" when changing profile, starting from database file (or mysql), cluster of choice, CAT system and connection, profile saved in communicator (email, notifications, etc) so the fastest and safe way is to restart

Thanks, Terry & Daniele. It sounds like running two instances wouldn't work that great for us with one radio. If she decides to get active again I'll just put her name or call in the Comment field and export/import her contacts into her logbook later.

A nice thing about Log4OM is that it exports EVERYTHING and makes exporting and importing between logs or for transfers or backups super easy.

Thanks & 73,

Hi,
if you have one rig you can create 2 profiles... it's "rare" that 2 operators are active on the same rig and both needs to have their log active... and switch time is less than 30 seconds (time to step up from the chair and switch seat with your wife)

That way you will not need another software or something different than Log4OM, and both will benefit of the new features

Hello - new to the forum and Log4OM. This thread looks like a good place to jump in.

It seems that a profile is associated with a database (log), but can different profiles be associated with different QSO(s) in a single database (log)?

I keep all US QTH QSOs in one "log" for DXCC purposes. There are two QTHs that are fixed here in TX and four different remote stations that I use (Remote Ham Radio's system) in other parts of the country. The fixed stations are easy - I'm at one or the other for a period of time. For the remotes, I often switch between stations (sometimes ever other QSO) and also switch between remote and fixed in a single operation session.

In my other logging program, DX4WIN, there is a "group" tag that can be added to each QSO letting me switch from QTH to QTH every QSO if I want with all QSOs in the same log for awards. Using the groups, I can filter the single log to look at award progress by QTH and to import/export LOTW with the correct QTH information.

I have the impression from this thread, the manual and testing, that profiles is not how this would handled in Log4OM. Any suggestions as to how to achieve this?

I'm really impressed with the program so far!

Yes, you can have multiple profiles all pointing to the same log file.
I have profile for:

IW3HMH
IW3HMH/P
IW3HMH/QRP
IW3HMH/P Venice lagoon activations

Every profile is a completely new profile, you can have different CAT connected, using different data sources for external lookup (or nothing if when /P you don't have internet connection), different QSL defaults, cluster filters and so on.
Choice was different from DX4WIN because i wanted to have COMPLETELY different and autonomous profiles (if you have 2 different stations you can have a profile for each one, with dedicated settings for rigs and other things). This, unfortunately, required a "complete restart" to correctly start services and other features without overcomplicating the code with "switch" reconnections. On the other side it's pretty rare that you need, in a single session, to switch between profiles...

Remember to set significative data in station settings (station callsign, operator callsign and other) in order to be able to identify QSO made with different profiles

Excellent Danielle. I will experiment some more with profiles.

Your approach adds much more flexibility than DX4WIN. Actually, I can see the restart being helpful in switching back and forth between fixed and remote. Remote stations are great fun, but do add complexity.

Thanks for the quick response.
