Sorting & copying Qsos

Post by kn4zo »

First off, thanks to Daniele and the Team for a great piece of software. I'm a former HRD user that has not been active for several years. I now find that the free version of HRD is no longer supported and I am moving everything over to Log4OM.

I have a couple of questions, though - First is that I can't find out how to sort the QSO window by date & time. It starts out sorted correctly in descending order, but if the order is reversed by clicking on the "Date" heading, the dates are sorted ok, but the times of multiple QSOs under each date seem to be random. Is there a way to correctly sort by date AND time in ascending order?

Second, after sorting the QSO list, when I am done editing a QSO and select "Save & Close", the list refreshes and the sort order goes back to the default order. Also, the "selection bar" is not on the QSO i just edited, but sometimes not even visible without scrolling the list. Is there a way to fix that?

Third, Is there a way to cut & paste QSOs between two (SQLite) databases? I have a log from another logging program that I exported, but it has QSOs from both me and my XYL (also a ham) mixed in it. The ADIF export of the old program is very basic and leaves out a lot of fields that I want to use, so I started editing the mixed file after importing to Log4OM with the intent to cut her QSOs and paste them into a new log, but can't find a way to do that. Maybe export to ADIF from Log4OM, then import into a new log? will this keep ALL the fields that I've edited?

Fourth, is there a way to import QSOs from anything other than an ADIF file? Like a database file or spreadsheet file? It may help me get around issue (3) above.

I know that's a lot of questions, but I've been looking at the docs and forum and can't find the answers.

Thanks in advance for any help, and thanks again for your work on Log4OM.

To your third question: Export your log to a ADIF file. It will export any changes you've made.

You can also, export only your QSOs as a manual operation which may take a ??few?? times to get all yours together minus your XYLs. Then import each file to a new log database.

For the sorting question, clicking on the column header sort it as you've noticed by the field you clicked. There is not a way to sort multiple columns at the same time.

And, when editing a QSO, as you've noticed, it does revert/refresh to your log in it's original order. I'm not sure but it may be on our internal Mantis list of things needed.

Thanks for the quick reply, Chuck. That's good news. I was afraid some information may be lost during the export/import process. So it sounds like if I have the "Operator" field filled in for each of us, I can search for each and export them to an ADIF, then import into a new database/log file for each of us. I'll try that.

I think that both of these would be nice to make the program a little more user-friendly and versatile. But so far, it still looks like a great program and I am planning on making it my main logging/operating software.

Thanks again,

Hi,
nothing of the ADIF imported informations will be lost in the import phase. We retain and use (or, at least, load in our belly) all available adif fields, even the one we don't use/support actually.

Once you have imported your log there are some "massive update" features in Log4OM that will allow you to fill the gaps of informations not exported in from your previous log.
One field, very important, is STATION_CALLSIGN, that is automatically set by Log4OM on import, if missing, using the one you have set in the program configuration (your callsign).

If you have 2 logs from 2 different station calls, just set your call in the program config, import and then export back. Then change callsign (or create another user profile with another call), import the second file and export to ADIF.
You now will have 2 ADIF with those fields set, and those can be loaded again on Log4OM

If you have 2 users with the same PC, just create 2 profiles, and for each profile create a separate database. Everyone can now have it's own log... or merge the 2 exported ADIF in a single file to have the 2 logs together, now logically distinct by station callsign.

Multiple sorting is not so easy to achieve using the standard grid control. I will search for a workaround, but it's not simple to achieve (was requested some months ago).

Thanks for that additional information, Daniele. I think I understand what I need to do now, and am going to try some importing/exporting tonight with some smaller groups of contacts from separate ADIF files to see how it works.

Thanks again for the help,

An easy way to separate your log from your wife's would be to import the complete HRD database into Log4om

Then in the archive manager use the search parameters to select all QSOs where the operator, station or owner call sign is your wife's - Can't remember which of those fields we designated in HRD but one of the will hold the call

Now from the manager export them as an ADIF

Repeat this for your own call

Now create separate databases for you and your wife and import the appropriate ADIF into each.

If you are not certain how to do this send me the HRD ADIF and I will do it for you

Thanks for the info, Terry, and the offer to help me import the log. That's very kind of you!

But I was able to get us separated into two individual log files. Everything wasn't in one HRD file. I had separate files for us in HRD, but we were mixed up in another program that was specific to a net we used to participate in. I couldn't get that program to export the "operator" field into the ADIF and we were mixed up in it. So what I did was import the mixed up ADIF into Log4OM and go through by hand and set the operator, then export each operator into and ADIF, then import each into new separate databases. It worked, and I learned a lot about using Log4OM in the process.

I found the "massive QSO update" feature very useful in doing this. Thanks to Daniele for that tip.

One feature that would be nice is to allow a "contains" operator in the custom "search parameters" of the QSO Manager. A lot of the comments in my original file held the operator call, but I couldn't see how to search for a string other than at the start of the field.

Thanks again Terry & Daniele & Chuck. I'm now officially a Log4OM user!

Hi Dave, use the LIKE function in search parameters.
If you want to find something that "starts with" simply set LIKE and the string.
If the text could be INSIDE the whole string just type "%" + text (eg. %IW3HMH)

That's EXACTLY what I needed. Thanks Daniele!
