Grid Squares issues

Post by MM0TWX »

There is a growing group of DXers chasing grid squares (IO75, EF32, etc.) on HF (http://gridsontheair.com).

Log4OM seems to be the preferred log among this group. However, many notice that after lookup on QRZ.com many times (not always) squares appear as "New Grid" even if that square has been workd before. This is a little confusing.

Can the problem be fixed?

Also, the very useful QSO map function would be even more useful if the map showed not only the worked squares, but the whole Maidehead Locators grid.

Thank you very much in advance.

Its probably a new grid for that band or mode

You should probably check out DXAtlas which probably provides the type of mapping you require

Thank you, Terry.

I must say that I really do not find your answer satisfactory, however.

I spend my radio days chasing grid squares - do you think I have not checked, double checked and triple checked before posting here? There are many times when a grid square has been worked and yet is signalled as all time new one (NEW GRID, not GRID BAND or GRID MODE).

Concerning mapping, of course there are plenty good resources for that, but they require one to leave the logging software and, especially, do not interact directly with one's contacts database. What Log4OM already does in terms of mapping in relation to gridsquares is excellent - all that is needed would be to have to have the Maidenhead grid superimposed on the QSO map, and not only the worked squares.

I very much appreciate what the developers and hepers are doing with this incredible software. Given how complex it is already, I would have thought that the two points I raise would require only minimal adjustments.

Thanks agan.

Pete,

Clearly the tone and content of your reply indicates that you are very annoyed and upset by my response to your question and I find that rather upsetting!

Let me explain the reason for the brevity of my answer:

1. I created several QSO's with the same grid reference but with different bands, modes, dates and time to test for any inconsistancy in the grid display as you described.

The result was it worked fine, so at this point and with no other similar reports I have to conclude the program is working as designed.

2. Over 90% of all questions we receive are due to missunderstandings of how the program functions, failure to read the user guide or watch the Youtube tutorials plus requests for new features.

The remaining 10% mainly being due to:
  • Features being in development and users asking for something we plan for future development
  • CAT issues due to incorrect interfacing
  • Questions about other software interfacing to Log4OM like WSJT, N1MM etc
  • Enhancements of existing features
  • Actual program faults
I think anyone would conclude that your post was likely to be due to some missunderstanding, hence the suggestion that it was probably a new grid for that band or mode.

My suggestion to try DX Atlas was an effort to try and be helpful by pointing you to a very comprehensive short term display facility, because adding the full grid range to the maps is not quiet as simple as you indicate!

However as I am sure that you still find the above less than helpful? lets delve deaper!

Please supply me with an ADIF file containing half a dozen QSO's where the grid issue happens when entering the call sign for the QSO's in the ADIF file. Post it here as a ZIP file please.

Please also post a screen shot of the Log4OM UI displaying the grid issue with a QSO lookup in progress

I will then use your ADIF file to try to replicate your issue.

Hello again, Terry.

Thanks once more for your reply.

First of all, let me say that, although I was born in Italy, I grew up mother tongue Italian, English and French. I am an academic and for a living I teach and write books, in English. That is to say that I think I have a decent command of the language. How you may have construed my message (in which I thank you twice and express admiration for the software and those who work on it in various capacities) as "being annoyed and upset" defies my comprehension. In my understranding, "not finding an answer satisfactory" is very different from "being annoyed and upset". All that is said just to make my intentions clear: no criticism whatsoever, for anybody involved. If anything, gratitude for the time and energy everybody puts into this.

Concerning the NEW GRID issue, I believe there is not much to misunderstand as to the functionality of the software. It is simply my repeated experience that an already worked grid square (i.e. FN20) occasionally appears with the light blue NEW GRID button lit up (this should be irrispecitve of BAND and MODE, as there are specific buttons for those). For this reason, I keep the QSO map (which is perfectly accurate in terms of grids worked) open all the time and check visually. The fact that, in your tests, you had a different experience does not, I believe, invalidate my own experience. This is a minor problem, so forget about it.

I take your word that implementing the change I suggest (Maidenhead grid on the QSO map) would be technically difficult. Naively, I thought that since the map already highlights the worked squares (and is entirely scalable), adding the reference grid would heve been relatively simple.

In a nutshell, I have been using for years an exceptional piece of software, made available for free. I have no entitlement to "demand" anything, and the issues I pointed out - again - were not meant as criticism. You can consider thes issue closed.

OK I will close the thread as you don't wish to supply an ADIF for me to check
