If, by chance, one had to re-install the main program, is there a way of re-installing the config from one of the saved .xml files or must we input all again fresh?

Re: re-install
Always do an un-install before a re-install. The config should be saved.

Re: re-install
I had an issue where I wanted to go back to an earlier time but in Win8.1 you don't appear to have the straight forward "system restore" function. Instead, it analysed by system, told me there were some important files that were somehow missing and it would remove some programs before doing a "refresh". Log4OM was one of the programs that got removed. So I reinstalled and now, on the config screen, it is empty. So, what I want to know is, is there a way of importing a previously saved config to a fresh install. I can't see where, or if, this can be done. (even though I have now re-done it all again...but would be nice to know for the next time
)

Re: re-install
You configuration settings are saved in the C:/.............../????/Roaming/Log4om folder and the files in this folder are not removed during an uninstall of log4om.
So uninstalling Log4om and installing a later release will normally ensure that your settings are preserved
It seems to me that WINDOZE has removed these configuration files during the process that you described in your first post, this should not happen of course!
Best advice is to copy the C:/.............../????/Roaming/Log4om folder and all of its contents to a flash drive or to the cloud in case WINDOZE decides to play god again.
For security and ease of use I now run the portable version of Log4om from my Dropbox, the program, configuration files and database are all stored there! This ensures that the OS cannot screw up my data and also provides access to the software from all of my PC's which have Dropbox installed.

Re: re-install
In the backup folder there should be, as well as your backup ADIF files, a couple of files called config_201408291010.xml and communicatorconfig_201408291010.xml
simply get the latest ones (or the one you know are ok, based on creation date indicated in the file name (YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS format), remove the _123414142142 and place config.xml and communicatorconfig.xml in the config folder
