Extra features

Post by KA4CDN »

Hi guys.

After using QRZ.com for a couple of years and now setting it up for my father (whom is much less computer user than I) I'd like to make a few suggestions which I believe would be very easy to add:

QRZ.com look up
I think a nice (and very easy I believe) added feature would to be to activate the "Lookup" button when a QSO in log book is selected. Currently the "Lookup" button is only active when a Call Sign is entered up top/left. But if I'm looking through my log and want to revisit an operator's QRZ.com page I can not easy do that.

Browser tab
Add a default "home page" or better, a couple of short cuts/book marks. The default or bookmarks could be entered in Setup or in a text configuration file.

Time zone setting
Allow time to be entered/viewed in local time zone. Maybe there is a setting somewhere for this already and I am missing it. Log records and upload/download/import/export of coarse would all still be in UTC.

Simplified QSL label printing(this one might not be easy)
I must be missing something with the current label because in my mind it is extremely complicated for what I and my father want to do, which is simply to select a prior QSO and print a mailing label. With QRZ.Com this is two clicks: one pops up a separate window (where you could increase/decrease the print size if so desired) and a Print button. Click the Print button and a label shoots out of the wireless label printer. Easy. I've read through the Log4OM manual and spent a couple of hours trying to get a label to print much less understand the feature and purpose to no avail. Caveat is I am not a contester or an awards seeker. I just want to mail my card. (So this rolls back somewhat to my first two suggestions - If I could select a prior QSO contact, press Lookup so that QRZ.com is displayed in the Browser tab, I could just print from there.)

Thanks for a great logger product and for considering my suggestions.

Thanks for the video link. I went though those steps yesterday and that worked Ok but I could not get it to print for Direct only. Have you been able to get that to work?

Mike,
Are you sure that you clicked the direct button in the Analysis window before clicking the green check mark at the bottom of the window as shown in the graphic below?

I just did a quick test and it worked fine for me including the address labels as show by the screen shot attached

Terry,

Yes I did exactly that and I got the same PDF output you did. However - all I want/need is the address label. That print out is showing other labels (two per contact) that I don't care about. Also, I have a label printer that prints one label at a time. Not a sheet. It is a Brother label printer for what it is worth. Printing DK1201 labels off a roll. QRZ.com handles it just right.

Thank you for your help.

Well printing just the QSO label is easy - Don't check the address label box and then you will only print the QSO details

However at this point Roll label printers are not supported, the good news is that Daniele has purchased one so that he can add support some time soon

Sorry I guess I'm not being clear. The only thing I want/need is the mail address. I do not want the QSO info.

I hope my other suggestions do not get lost/over looked in this discuss re label printing. If I can do "Lookup" for operators in my log book (qso list) then that would solve this issue as well.

Cheers and thanks again for your help.

I agree with with Mike on the need for a QRZ lookup feature (right click) on contacts already in the log. This is something I have suggested before, and had hoped that it would have been in 1.18, but I forgot to followup. But make it independent of the External sources setting.

Also helpful would be two lookup buttons (QRZ & HamQTH) in place of the one current Lookup button which is tied to the Setting/Settings 1 tab selection of External sources. That way you could have your external sources set to HamQTH for better no-cost location data, but still have a QRZ Lookup button for external browser lookup of station information. Again, this was suggested and I believe it is on the list. Should be difficult and I think it would be very useful for a lot of users.

Thanks!

I have loaded 1.19.0 and was disappointed to see that while additional options have been added to the context menu when right click on a Recent QSO entry, one can still not perform a "Lookup", i.e., search QRZ.com for the call sign. You can now upload and modified external logs via the context menu. Please - can we have a Lookup? Or, when a line is selected and the Lookup button is pressed, that call is looked up?

Also along the same line - I saw where someone had asked about adding the ability to configure the Lookup URL/source differently from the call search. For example, I use HAMQth to look up call information configured (I do not have a QRZ XML subscription). So when I press the Lookup button I go to the HAMQth website whereas I much rather go to the QRZ website. This would be very nice.

Thanks,
Mike

The lookup should have already been done while the QSO was being added to the logbook

However in the case of historic QSO's imported from another program via ADIF etc it is easy to carry our these online updates by:

1. Using the QSO Manager, selecting the QSO and clicking the "Update info" button on the tool bar'

2, Double clicking on a QSO in any of the lists views (Recent QSO, QSO Archive Manager, QSO Information, and all of the QSL manager lists) will provide an edit window with a "Update" button that will do what you require.

A right click followed by clicking a selection from the drop down is exactly the same effort as double clicking on a QSO so I don't really understand why this is required, perhaps I am missing something?
