Log4OM

Last days I have full uninstall the Log4OM and try the "portable" version.

This operation permit the full copy of my data now in c:\log4om on exerternal support,
NOTE: the log file C:\Users\Sandro\AppData\Roaming\LogOM\log is still in user profile.

The conversion of configuration is not so trasparent, but can be realized.

Remember: print your configuration, some path can change.

PRO:
I can save my logbook
I can use my logbuk on other machines (PC)
No disinstall is needed
mydata is in my hands
no problems with UAC

PAY:
symply ?? install dot.net 4.0 and relative updatades not from Window Update

NOTE:
Windows Updades install only a reduced client version of "run time" of .NET
You must install the full version dotNetFx40_Full_x86_x64.exe in your language and do the relative updates via Microsoft updates

I am having some problems with the portable version.

I have it on a USB memory stick... I put the stick in to computer A) and I created the database on the memory stick. I made many changes to the Layout (every column option was selected by default so I removed many). I have this all set up now, looking nice for me. I close the program down.

I take my memory stick to computer B). Computer B) is not connected to any radio, I just want to show the software to a friend... I start the program again..... but I get an error message that says Unable to generate a temporart class (result=1).
error CS0016: Could not write to output file 'c:\Documents and Settings\Fred\Local Settings\Temp\hz2j4lcm.dll' -- Access is denied.'

I click OK to close this message and get another 3 or so error messages (I did not write them down) and continue to click OK to close them..... eventually, Log4OM comes up on the screen, BUT it does not remember the name or location of my database, AND it has forgotten all of the Layout settings I made on computer A) Now here is the BAD part... IF I close the program down (computer B), and I plug my stick back in to computer A) once again, I have to make lots of changes to my Layout because it has forgotten all changes again.

I have repeated this swapping from machine A) to B) and back many times now and it is always the same.... it looses the Layout settings. one each machine, and does not remember the dadabase name and location on machine B).
However, the error message only appears once UNLESS I reboot machine B) and then, after reboot, I get the error one time.

This poses two questions for me....

1) why is a 'portable' version attempting to write anything to the hard drive of any machine ?? (machine 2 might be anywhere and belong to anyone and it should NOT be written to.) and
2) where are the Layout settings being saved to ?? not the memory stick in this case !

PS... I am happy to do any further testing of the portable version that you might want done.

Try this from page 133 of the user guide

Running Log4OM from a memory stick

1. In order to install Log4OM on a memory stick, it is necessary to copy the files from a LOG40M program that has been installed on a PC or download the ‘Portable’ version from the LOG4OM website.

2. Locate the C:\Program Files\IW3HMH\ folder and copy the Log4OM folder to the memory stick.
In the LogOMUI.exe.config file in the Log4OM folder located on the memory stick, add the * between the inverted commas "" in the line as below:-
<add key="ConfigurationPath" value="*" />

3. On the memory stick, create a folder called ‘Config’ inside the Log4OM folder. e.g
J:\Log4OM\Config

4. Locate the C:\Users\ USER NAME\AppData\Roaming\LogOM folder on the PC and copy the contents of the folder to the memory stick folder J:\Log4OM\Config

5. Create a shortcut in the memory stick root directory J:\ to the LogOMUI.exe which is located on the memory stick at J:\Log4OM

6. Plug the memory stick into a PC and double click on the shortcut to run Log4OM.

This works for me and nothing is written to the host computer!

NOTE: I have a lot of problems with JT65 and OmiRig. SOLVED by writing a bridge that simulate the swiss version of ??? to my poor 857 radio in C#.

You are not forgotten Sandro, I have asked Daniele to check this out and respond to you
