Stop Cluster Question/Issue

During contests, when spots are arriving very quickl,y it would be nice to be able to stop the appearance of new spots and then resume fresh spots when desired. I tried the "STOP CLUSTER" icon that is on the top line along with frequencies and immediately to the right of the Elevation. When I do this, all the spots simply disappear. When I click STOP CLUSTER again, the cluster spots resume however, there are spots that were previously there that are now gone.

So, what is STOP CLUSTER supposed to do? Can it be made to simple pause the appearance of new spots?
