logging of grid locator

Post by VK7XX »

I may have missed this so forgive me if it is a dumb question... 99% of my contacts are on digital modes, where I use WSJT-X with JTAlert and Log4om. I notice that whenever I work a station the Grid box on the log4om main screen is filled with a 6 figure grid, but when the call is logged, only 4 figures are recorded. Have I missed a setting somewhere ???

John,

Only 4-digits of the grid code is sent from WSJTx, JTAlert or JTDX.

I'm really old-school and have the 'prompt to log' panel pop up from WSJTx, JTDX or JTAlert and it only has the 4-digits. Once that panel pops up I manually enter in the last two digits. Once it saves the 6-digits is then stored.

Juergen may have some other ideas as he does far more digital than I do.

That 4 digits are send by WSJT-X/JTDX is correct so far, also no other data (ike Name, QTH e.g.) are send
to Log4OM. If Log4OM receives a grid with 4 digits and there´s no 6-digit grid stored at the setted lookup
service it will be stored as 4-digit only. If there´s a 6-digit grid at a lookup service it´s stored as 6-digit one
at my side.

Did you have set 6-digits in the Log4OM setup ?

Hello Juergen, I just checked.. Mine is set to 6 so I do not know why only 4 are being logged :-(
John

<EDIT> I just noticed that none of the 'Prefered Bands' were ticked, I have now selected the bands and I think that has fixed it for me. Thank you

<EDIT No2> no, this did not fix the problem, and like Nolan said, only 4 digits are in the 'prompt to log' pop up panel from wsjt-x... so it appears that it is a wsjt-x problem.

John,

No way to fix the lack of 6-digit grid when WSJTx and JTDX don't send but 4-digit grids.

I'm sure Danielle could come up with something, but it would also likely cause slow-downs in the V2 program. Certainly don't want that.

This is a difficult situation and you will not overcome it by changing values in Log4OM

We don't overwrite existing information, so to manually overwrite the 4 digit with 6 digit it will be necessary to empty (Delete) the grid field then do an online lookup which will fill the empty grid field.

It is dangerous to do this automatically because as an example it could be a grid for a POTA, SOTA, IOTA etc which is perhaps not the grid recorded on QRZ against the call sign e.g. G4POP/P will look up as JO01jp but when portable I could have been several hundred miles away on a summit with a reference of IO55pp

WSJT confine it to 4 digits because that is all the data package can contain so until WSJT add some code to change to 6 digits before saving nothing can be done. Of course then WSJT face the same issue of where to get the 6 digit grid from and maintain accuracy of data? I dont see Joe doing that in the foreseeable future!
