Description and setup of portable version

Post by gm4caq »

Hi
I wanted to put Log4OM on my laptop so that it is a separate system from my main station.. generally for portable operation with a simple HF rig.
I thought the best version might be the "Portable" download but I cannot find any description of why it is a separate version, or how to install/run it.

Am I running down a rathole here? Missing something simple?

When I download the Portable version there is no install file or instructions in the zip..
I have even read the manual!!! The portable version is not mentioned.

Any pointers gratefully received.

Cheers
Bob

Hallo Bob,

it´s simply a "portable version" which means that no installation is needed. Unpack the file and store
the unpacked folder elswere on your HDD. Now you can make a shortcut to the desktop that you can
start it from there.

Setup and all the other things are the same as in the installable version. Means, if you like to have
CAT to Log4OM and another software like WSJT-X you have to run all as administrator.

Note that the new configuration folder is in the Log4OM folder and NOT in C://user/username/appdata/roaming/LogOM

Thanks for the clarification Juergen

I will give your method a try.
Hopefully I can get it to run... not been successful yet. I will keep trying different things.

There really is No point in using the portable version on your own laptop it's intended to run from a memory stick when visiting a friend or club's pc, just install the normal version!

If you want to use the same database as your home pc then you should move your sqlite file to a cloud storage and then access the single data base from both pc's

Hi Terry
Further to my attempt to get a second Log4om setup on an old laptop ( Dell Pentium dual core 64bit) W10
I tried downloading and running the portable version (2.18) both onto the laptop and onto a thumb drive, both failed to load. Not an update but a clean installation.
The screen seems to start with the Log4Om logo for about a second then clears and it seems the program aborts at that stage.

So I loaded and installed the non portable version (2.18) onto the laptop and that runs perfectly, so my original plan to have a "Portable" setup is working.. but not quite as I expected....

The idea is to leave my base station setup alone.. its working and I love the ease it works.
With my portable setup I will be trying out a Chinese USDX radio at 2-3w from my car(/P not/M), /MM, in Spain on hols etc.
Its a VERY small radio almost shirt pocket size and just the job for QRP/P
The thumb drive version of LOG4OM would be even better for transport if I can get it to work...

I have no idea why it wont load when the not portable version works fine.. one of life's mysteries..

Bob,
The portable version is self contained so just extract the files to an empty folder or onto a thumb drive.

Once the files are extracted just double click the L4ONG.exe file to start the software, I create a desktop shortcut to the exe file to make life easier.

You dont mention which operating system you are using on the laptop and dont forget you must have the latest version of .net installed and also the latest windows service pack.

I would still store the sqlite database on the cloud (Onedrive, Dropbox, Google drive) and then on each PC use the same sqlite file so that all QSO's that you enter whether on the main PC or the laptop get synchronised without the need to export/import an ADIF file. (Of course you must have the same cloud storage installed on both PC's)

Hi Terry, thanks for assisting my efforts to get this running.

I can understand your comments about the benefits of putting the database on the cloud, However it is not the issue for me at this stage... I have desktop version running on my laptop and desktop machine but I still cannot get a clean install of the portable version to work.

From the info from Jeurgen, DF5WW, I have now downloaded the Portable 2.18 version, unzipped it to a thumb drive (clean install NOT an update) and tried to run L4ONG.exe both in the old laptop and my base station I7 PC. both running W10.
The desktop version of LOG4OM runs fine on both computers but the portable version does not run on either. ( Also tried "run as administrator") so I guess that the machines software environment is suitable, unless the portable version requires some software that the desktop version doesn't; otherwise perhaps someone can check if all the files that should be in the zip file are actually there? Something isn't right.

Am I missing some step in the procedure?
Do you know if anyone else has managed to get a clean install of 2.18 working on a thumb drive?

Cheers

Bob,
Sorry I did not respond yesterday but I was at the hospital all day.

However this morning I have downloaded version 2.18 from our web site and un-zipped it onto a memory stick.

I then ran the L4ONG.exe file and was welcomed by the set up screen which I filled in and then created a new logbook on the same memory stick whereupon the program ran as normal, see screen grab below:

I did not bother to set up CAT control but I am confident that it would also function!

My best guess is that something is blocking your files being run from the memory stick, like defender, virus software or firewall.

Thank you for running that test Terry

I will have a look at my setup and see what could be the problem

Hope all went well at the hospital

Hi Terry
Checked my antivirus and found a problem.
During extraction of the zip file the antivirus suspects an executable and sandboxes it.
I re-extracted with antivirus turned off and works fine.. but sloe.. from the thumb drive
Many thanks in helping to get to the bottom of this issue.
