Kenwood TS-890 Frequency display doesn't work with MR

Post by WD5ACP »

The link to the radio fails to read the frequency of the memory channels with the rig is in the MR mode. VFOA and VFOB work correctly when the radio is operating in the VFO mode.
The Kenwood protocol has specific codes for determining if the radio is in VFO or MR mode, and also when in MR mode, a different command for reading the MR frequency. It appears Log4OM + Hamlib is missing it (but I've seen other programs work with the TS-890 that DO properly read the actual freq regardless of mode.

MV reads the mode - MV0 = VFO mode and MV1 = MR mode

MA70 reads the MR "A" frequency and MR71 reads the MR "B" frequency.

Any chance Log4OM can be tweaked to look at the current mode (MV;) and if in VFO read the VFO frequencies, and if in MR mode, read the current MR frequencies?

Thanks.
PS - thanks for the program. Seems to do everything I could ask for, and more!

No joy with Omnirig. The issue may be that I'm using the free LPB2 USB data sharing software. I have 3 virtual ports (8, 9 and 10) and connected to the real physical port (COM4) from the 890. Everything works fine except the MR freq in Log4OM.

WIth the LPB2 sharing COM4, I can use any digital program (JS8Call. WSjit-X, FlDigi and Winlink Express (all programmed to use COM8) with Log4OM using COM10 and it's golden. Radio QSY, mode, display all work as expected (I only use 1 of the digital programs at a time + Log4OM).

I don't know if the issue is with Hamlib or LPB2. LPB2 is spec'd that only the first com port (in my case, COM8) has full functionality. It's an old program, but it works great for sharing 1 USB port to many Windows programs.

Why do you need LP Bridge especially when by their own admission they admit to not supporting 32 bit text fields, so what causes you to use that software?

My friend Robin used to slavishly use LP Pan and LP Bridge but now has simplified his setup and these are obsolete when using his variouse radios, amplifiers, rotators etc

Omni-rig isn't supported by all software, where LPB2 just splits the com ports. If everything worked with Onmirig LPB2 wouldn't be needed.

This MR thing isn't much of an issue for me. I don't do much with the MR feature (mostly 60 meters) and it's easy enough to either manually punch in the freq in Log4OM or just tap the M>V button on the radio.

FWIW Elecraft had a similar issue with their KAT-500 tuner that speaks "kenwood". They released a firmware update so it now sees and reacts not only to the VFO freq, but also the MR freq.

My question was really do you need LPB?

What other software are you running at the same time as Log4om?
